How I Overcame Illiteracy

February 14, 2018 at 12:10AM

Happy Valentine's Day to You and Yours! I also wrote and published this post for "The Bachelorette" blog series dedicated to all Bachelorettes who could be my Valentine. In this Life blog series, I will share how I overcame illiteracy. If someone told me 20 years ago that I will have an official website with the domain name and be an author of a Music, Hip Hop And Faith Life Blog that engages 2.3 million page views and 2.1 million unique visitors, averaging 2,000 plus page views and visits per day, it may have challenged me to fathom it.

20 years ago at this time in 1998, I had no computer, I was self-conscious, felt socially awkward as a 15 year old, still searching to find myself. I attempted my hand at basketball during a summer league, bec…

Have We Reached Our Industry Pinnacle?

January 22, 2018 at 01:05PM

Have we reached our industry pinnacle? As a professional beatboxer, I can say with no doubt I've reached the pinnacle of my career multiple of times in the areas of entrepreneurship, personal as well as professional growth and financial success to the point even surpassing overall projections and even more than one of my lofty ultimate career goals. Because of this overall career allows me room to write down and assess my goals in other aspects of my life and career goals for the next 10 to 20 to 30 years. When this happens, we have to set the bar of our standards higher and set loftier goals. I've been faithful to the art of beatboxing and the entertainment industry for many years that I am grateful that it has been faithful in return. I count my bl…

First Inaugural Rock The School Bells Hawaii Conference

October 17, 2017 at 12:20PM

The next day after I performed at US Vets at Barber's Point Kapolei with Prisma Dance, I arrived at the First Inaugural Rock The School Bells Hawaii Conference at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus. I was invited by g-girl Yoda to co-teach with her the dance and breakdance workshop. I taught students of Dole Middle School, Kalaukaua Middle School and Farrington High School the background and foundation for beatboxing and the funk style dance called popping with the Michael Jackson Billie Jean dance routine that features the side glide and moonwalk also known as the backslide. Here I performed it a cappella with no microphone with the beatboxing that combines the Billie Jean dance. I want to thank B-girl Yoda, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Rock the Scho…

Moonwalk At Moon Festival on the Chinatown Cultural Plaza Moongate Stage

October 12, 2017 at 12:16PM

I dedicated this set to my father who passed on this Father's Day for the 3rd Annual Moon Festival at the historic Chinatown Cultural Plaza on the legendary Moongate Stage in Downtown Honolulu. I also performed my staple routine of "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson that combines beatboxing, the dance, side glide, and moonwalk or backslide on the Moongate Stage.

Performing police siren sounds and my original "Boots and Cats" beatbox routine.

Patriot Day

September 11, 2017 at 04:29AM

Patriot Day proclaimed by George W. Bush is the National Day of Prayer and Rememberance of the Victims of Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

I remember September 11th, 2001 as clear as though it happened yesterday. It was my first year in community college.. when the terrorist attacks happened, I became depressed and I was unable to focus in my studies. My heart saddened. I voted for President George W. Bush, because he was the President to keep our country safe. I am grateful to God for His hand of protection over our great nation. I continue to lift our President Donald J. Trump, senate, congress, governors, majors and all those in authority in my intercessory prayers that God continues to give them wisdom, guidance, counsel, insight, might, understand…

Happy Labor Day Weekend

September 1, 2017 at 08:15AM

Happy Labor Day Weekend to you Jason Tom blog reader! Yes you! I commend each of you that has found your labor of love so that you can purpose each day that is directed toward your endeavor and goal in life. Maybe, you are discovering what your labor of love is today and right at this moment. What is my labor of love you ask? Most definitely, my labor of love is my faith in God, beatboxing, and mathematics, without a shadow of a doubt, it is my biggest passion and deeper is the purpose that propels me to serve others. Beneath it all, it's family, ʻohana, my Word of Life family, the body of Christ brothers and sisters, aloha, compassion, empathy, understanding, and a sense of community. Also being an uncle to my niece.

Speaking of Labor of love, I want to thank Ar…

Her Math Tutor Can Dance

August 26, 2017 at 04:03AM

I want to thank those of you (and you know who you are) that made it to my Uplift opening showcase at Ala Moana Centerstage that also featured one of the new students of the Human Beatbox Academy and dancers of reLITE, Prisma Dance, Playground Dance Studio, and the Kazu Clan. You know I am a child of the 1980's, because I beatbox and moonwalk as though the 1980's were yesterday. My math tutee has a sense of humor in how she shared my video of my Uplift opener at Ala Moana Centerstage and her hashtag read, "my math tutor can dance." What? A mathematician who can beatbox and moonwalk and dance? Get out! That is unheard of, how is that logical? Yes, it is possible.

Thank you Hawaii Baptist Academy for helping me to kick-off the Perfect Father Tour in memory of my father, who passed away on this Father's Day. I had a great time providing live beatbox entertainment, an inspirational speech, beatbox workshop, and a Q&A session for their Gifted by One Assembly.

Story on this Gecko, Man

May 8, 2017 at 08:51AM

One of my early comic book character creations of approximately 25 to 27 years, during my second attempt at first grade when I moved to another elementary school and second grade through third grade, is Gecko Man. I drew Gecko Man then as a reflection of who I was as a child though in an adult body with a cape with superhero strength and capabilities like laser shooting powers from my hands with a superhero body spandex suit. Kind of like Spider-Man, Ice Man, Superman, and Batman. This Gecko Man character came to me when I put my hand on a pole and I felt warmth. I thought to myself, hmm, this doesn't feel hard like what a metal pole would feel like. Instead it felt soft and warm. So I looked under my hand was a gecko chilling on the pole even though I touched it…

Iolani School Boy Scouts

April 28, 2017 at 09:59PM

The number one fear in the world? Public speaking. Growing up on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, I'd shake or freeze up from nervousness and shyness when speaking in front of class among my peers. Made me quite self-conscious. I preferred being in the audience and I feared having the spotlight. Fast forward to today, having performed live beatboxing music and having done public speaking engagements such as the first and second TEDx Talks in Honolulu and other engagements in hip-hop culture classrooms in universities and events through 13 years have compelled me to get out of my comfort zone to develop my current personality and today, I no longer get the jitters unless I stop practicing and training. Earlier tonight, I spoke publicly in front of Hawaii's 4th graders…

Music Business And Audio Engineering

April 28, 2017 at 11:24AM

I stopped by the Mike Curb College MELE Program offered through Belmont University and University of Hawaii at Honolulu Community College advocated by Hawaii's former 2-term Governor Linda Lingle and Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona. And while at Honolulu Community College to meet up with my friend early this week I ran into two current MELE Music Business and Audio Engineering students. Long story short, after our formal introduction, they tell me, "get out, you're Jason Tom, our teacher spoke about you this morning and how you're one of the top beatboxers in this world." I said, "wow, really? You mean Eric Lagrimas? He was my former teacher in the Mike Curb MELE Program." They responded, "yes, he covered about hip-hop music and he mentioned your name." Thank you …

My Heroes and Influences

April 21, 2017 at 10:07PM

Many of my heroes and influences are the people I grew up with and some are those I have watched from afar. Many I've met and many I haven't. My heroes include my family, relatives, friends, colleagues, past and presentAcademy beatboxers, people of all walks, my fans, and the community. Here is a list of those you may or may not recognize who I have been inspired by and have been influenced by in one way or another.

  • Maximus Ornelas (Sep 7, 2001 - Feb 26, 2017; age 15)
I have not met or known of Maximus George Ornelas until today when I stumbled upon his obituary article in the Yakima Herald and I read that he had passed on due to a severe asthma attack and that one of his passions is to beatbox.

I looked if he had a Facebook and discovered he had vide…

Legend of Zelda Story at Hot Topic

April 15, 2017 at 01:22PM

Two years ago I met this trio Jennifer, Jeffrey and Charley at the Legend of Zelda section of the Ala Moana Center's Hot Topic store and one of them recognized me from one of my past performances at a hip-hop jam. I shared with them I was shopping for Legend of Zelda gear as I am about to prepare for my friend's son's 1st Birthday Party and the party theme is the Legend of Zelda. Then last year, Charley and Jennifer as well as the Kaimuki High School Band supported and voted for me in the NextNext Hawaii Music Competition and Charity Event where the proceeds from their votes went to the charity of my choice, the Ronald McDonald House Hawaii. Jennifer also shared with me that she was assisted by the Ronald McDonald House Charity and this meant so much to her a…

I also want to thank Josh Williams also known as J Wills for beatboxing with me to close Friday Night Flow. I first saw Jason Tom perform at a Cultural night event several years ago, at the back-then renowned club "Oceans 808" and was very impressed with his beatboxing skills - with nothing but his own mouth! - and the cool Michael-Jackson-Style dancing he used along with them. Then I met him officially at the Word Of Life Church Honolulu years later, and we've known each other since. Very sweet and professional guy, always with a friendly and positive vibe.
